"There is no rest around this place," said Daytona International Speedway President Frank Kelleher a few days ago. "I was just in the infield checking out all of the dirt that has been moved in. The crew that is building the track, the sun is shining, we're feeling good. We are in high gear coming off the 63rd running of the Rolex [24 hour race] where we had 61 cars getting after it for 24 hours. NASCAR Speed Weeks was wild from Wednesday qualifying through the duel, all the way up to William Byron joining me in Victory Lane, back-to-back Daytona 500 champion, It was cool. I left the championship breakfast with the Daytona 500 winner William Byron and Rick Hendrick on Monday, and I pulled out the tunnel and in front of the speedway, and Harley Davidson already had 6 53 ft trailers starting their build for the display for bike week. So the display area is rocking and rolling, Bike Week is here, and I'm excited for the gate to drop for the Daytona Supercross. Man, we're we're ready to go."
Yes, no venue in Monster Energy AMA Supercross is quite like Daytona, which treats all race winners with the highest regard, be it William Byron in NASCAR or Eli Tomac in Supercross.
But who will the winner be this year? It won't be Tomac, or last year's winner Jett Lawrence, as they're out with injuries. The last winner besides them, Justin Brayton, is retired and hosting Race Day Live qualifying coverage today. The last winner before that, Ryan Dungey, is also retired and serving as Grand Marshal today.
No one in the field now has won this race. Add that to the backdrop that is a wild 2025 season packed with surprises, and the recipe is right for a big one tonight. Cooper Webb has historically ridden very well at this track, citing his fitness and his ability to pick new lines as a track breaks down. He's taken second to Tomac here several times. Chase Sexton, as the 2024 Pro Motocross Champion, is plenty capable. Ken Roczen has been on the verge of a win all season. Malcolm Stewart logged an epic ride for a win the last time the series visited his home state of Florida just a few weeks ago. Could he find that magic again? Whoever wins here also gains huge momentum in the points chase, which is still very tight between Webb and Sexton, and Roczen is not out of the hunt, either.

Group A hit the track with Chance Hymas putting down a fast time of 1:22.304, it looked like he might just stay on top of the board as the other riders scrambled to get a clean lap in. Finally, with just over two minutes on the board Levi Kitchen took over the lead. His fast lap did not hold long though before Max Anstie was able to drop into the 1:21s. RJ Hampshire was third fastest, also able to beat Hymas’ time.

In 450 timed qualifying session one, last week’s fastest qualifier was the first rider to get into the 1:20’s with a 1:20.759. With two minutes left on the clock Chase Sexton beat Hill’s time by almost a second with a 1:19.977. Unsatisfied with that, on the last lap Sexton was able to drop that time by a second and a half getting a 1:18.35. Sending a message to his competition with both of his fastest times faster than anyone else who were still in the 1:20’s. Cooper, Hill, Webb, ad Roczen rounded out the top five.

Caden Dudney who went down in the second practice did not go out for qualifying. Liam Oehlhof who was second fastest, went down hard but was able to remount.
Timed Qualifying Session 2
250 East
In the second 250 qualifying it was Levi Kitchen who jumped to the top of the board first, bettering Max Anstie’s time from the first qualifier. Soon after his teammate Seth Hammaker bettered his time by three tenths of a second, only for Kitchen to drop the hammer and get into the 1:19s. With only 30 seconds left on the clock, Florida rider RJ Hampshire was able to better Kitchen's time by four tenths to take top qualifier.

Soon Jason Anderson moved into second, with Hill in third, with the top seven riders all in the 1:19 range. Finally, with only a minute and a half to go both Justin Cooper and Sexton jumped into the 1:18s. Night Show
250 Heat 1
The fans were treated to a show right from the start with Nate Thrasher going down in the first rythym section right after pulling the holeshot, Levi Kitchen slid out while trying to avoid hitting Thrasher. Then Tom Vialle took over the lead until Hardy Munoz jumped passed him on the wall jump. Vialle was able to get back by and Munoz rode great in second until only a few laps to go when Max Anstie, Max Vohland and Kitchen were able to all get by. Kitchen was on fire after going down on the opening lap and caught up to the back of Anstie. At the end it was Vialle with the win, and luckily Nate Thasher was able to come back into qualifying position for ninth.

Fastest qualifier RJ Hampshire pulled the holeshot in heat 2, with Hammaker in second and Chance Hymas in third. The front runners stayed the same, though with a couple of laps to go Seth Hammaker started closing to gap to Hampshire, but was never able to make a pass. Meanwhile further back Cameron McAdoo was working his way up from a bad start and was up to fifth by the last lap before tipping over and finishing seventh. Gage Linville and Henry Miller took the last two transfer spots in eighth and ninth.

450 Heat 1
Shane McElrath pulled the holeshot in the first 450 heat with Ken Roczen hot on his heels, and Ken was able to make the pass before the end of the first lap. From there he rode smooth out front, letting the race happen behind him. And what a race it was. Justin Hill eventually started charging and putting the pressure on McElrath, while Joey Savatgy and Justin Cooper closed in on Hill. It was a three-way battle with Hill blocking Savatgy allowing Cooper to move into fourth. But the next lap Hill tried to block Cooper and allowed Savatgy to pass them both! In the end it was Roczen with the win, McELrath rode great for second, Savatgy, Hill and Cooper.

450 Heat 2
A disastrous start to the second 450 heat when Cooper Webb went down in the first turn and then Chase Sexton who pulled the holeshot went down in the first rhythm much like Nate Thrasher in the first 250 heat. Aaron Plessinger and Justin Barcia were also caught up in that crash. Chase labored as he got back on his bike and pulled into the mechanics area to pick up his mechanic and head back to the pits. Meanwhile, Tampa winner Malcolm Stewart took over the lead and started to pull away a bit, while Cooper Webb started to work his way up into transfer positions. Webb eventually got around 250 West rider Coty Schock for fourth, who is racing his 250 in the 450 class and riding well. On the last lap Plessinger, who went down on the first lap, reeled in Anderson for second and pulled up to the rear tire of Stewart at the checkered flag.

Next Main
Landon Gordon pulled the holeshot for the SMX Next main event but soon surrendered the lead to Alexander Fedortsov who has been fastest all day. The Daytona track then proved why it is the toughest track of the year as it started picking riders off, starting with Leum Oehlhof who endoed huge off of the wall jump. Impressively he showed what he was made of when he got up to finish seventh. Luke Fauser and Landon Hartz both crashed out of podium positions. Meanwhile heart break out front when Fedortsov got a flat tire, he tried to limp it home but was unable. In the end it was Landon Gordon with the win, Enzo Temmerman who worked his way up from tenth on the first lap, and Jesson Turner in third.
250 Last Chance Qualifier
Jack Chambers pulled the holeshot in the 250 LCQ and opened a small lead while the action happened behind him. It was Chandler Baker, Trevor Colip, and Izaih Clark rounding out the transfer positions, all pacing each other, with Brtyon Carroll closing in making it a four-way battle. While it got dicey for a while, the riders finished in that same order.

450 Last Chance Qualifier
Luckily Chase Sexton was able to get through the first turn clean and came out with the holeshot in the 450 LCQ. Behind him it was Justin Starling, Jeremy Hand and Freddie Noren, until Hand went down hard after casing a rhythm, allowing Grant Harlan to get into a transfer position. Sexton gave everyone (and probably himself) a scare when he went off of the track in a turn. Further back Jerry Robin was on the move when he passed both Tristan Lane and Harlan on the same lap and went to work on Noren, though he came up just short of the pass, but still took the last qualifying spot.

250 Main Event
Chance Hymas looked to have the holeshot but Tom Vialle knifed underneath in turn one, and then went wheel to wheel with Max Anstie. Anstie got caught on the inside tough block and went down, dropping the championship leader to last. Vialle took off with the lead, and it was Hampshire and Kitchen battling through and catching Hymas for second. Three laps in, Hampshire got into second after the tussle with Hymas. Hampshire immediately ran down Vialle and the battle for the lead was on, Hampshire then used the outside of the off camber to take over the spot. At the same time Kitchen got around Hymas for third. For about two laps Kitchen was closing on Vialle but then disaster struck. Kitchen tried to wheelie into a gulley after the finish instead of hopping in—and that kicked the back of his Kawasaki up violently and resulted in a huge endo. It was a massive wreck and a lap later the red flag came out, leading to a staggered restart.
Hampshire held the lead on the restart ahead of Vialle Hymas Hammaker Bennick and Mumford, then Hampshire bobbled and Vialle almost got by. Anstie started in 11th and made his way up to eighth quickly. The running order with two minutes to go was Hampshire, Vialle, Hymas, Hammaker, Vohland, Mumford, Anstie, Bennick, Thrasher and Munoz in the top ten.
The final battle to watch up front was between Hymas and Hammaker for the final podium spot, as Hampshire had Vialle covered just ahead. A few spots back, Anstie passed Mumford to put his Yamaha into sixth in a points-salvaging ride.
With two laps to go Hammaker really started pushing Hymas, and he tripled through a section where Hymas doubled, and that was enough to get the final podium spot.
"It's special," said Hampshire. "Man, I lost my dad a few months ago, and this was his race. This is the only race we used to come to. He was here with us today. Some guy came up to us in the pits with one of my dad’s jerseys. I don’t know, it was just special today. I felt good, I had that comfort and that’s what was missing in those first two races. Finally got to burn one down in Daytona! That one was for dad."
Hampshire, after a bad round one, is now down 14 points. Vialle is down six on Anstie, second ranked after his runner-up finish.
"He passed me early and I was leading for a couple laps," said Vialle. "It was hard the track is tough and tricky. We went pretty much the same speed, I was pretty close but I think I missed a little bit, missed a couple of rhythms on the far right. But it’s still a long championship and we’re right there."
Hammaker took third, his first podium of the season, winning the battle with his trainer partner Hymas.
"That was pretty wild, me and Chance were going at it the whole main event, felt like being at the Dog Pound," said Hymas. "All the work is paying off. Second year in a row I’ve been on the podium at Daytona and we’ll keep the momentum rolling into next weekend."

450 Main Event
Jason Anderson holeshot the 450 main event ahead of Aaron Plessinger Cooper Webb and Ken Roczen. Chase Sexton, with the bad gate pick due to racing into the main in the LCQ, was 14th. Webb challenged Plessinger on the first lap for second but Plessinger didn’t give in, and secured second. Anderson puy in some good early laps and pulled away a bit. Sexton was making passes, getting Justin Cooper and Malcolm Stewart to start to see the back of the lead group. Seven minutes unto the race, Plessinger started rolling, challenged Anderson for the lead and then made the pass. The crowd was going crazy for the Cowboy! But there was more to cheer for as Roczen came to life, passing Webb and then Anderson in successive laps and suddenly charging after Plessinger, as they pulled away from Webb and Anderson.
At the halfway mark it was still heated, as Roczen was all over Plessinger for the lead with a bunch of good lines and huge speed jumping through the whoops. Meanwhile, Sexton got Anderson and as their lines came together, Anderson went off the track. Roczen then finally found an opening on Plessinger to take over the lead. Then Webb started to move, challenging his old teammate Plessinger for second. They battled fr two laps, then Webb made the move, then stalled! Sexton passed Plessinger too and then found himself on the rear wheel of Webb! Webb responded instantly by putting the hammer down and getting away from Sexton, and at the same time Roczen had a bad lap, and suddenly Webb was doing Webb things—rallying in the final moments. Webb nearly got to Roczen’s rear fender with 2:30 on the race clock, but then he cross rutted coming out of a corner and nearly went down. This allowed Roczen to pull back away. Meanwhile, Sexton was struggling down the stretch, and Plessinger got by him to bump him off the podium.
This time Webb's charge fizzled, and that final mistake proved too much to overcome. Roczen, the victim of late-race Webb charges so many times, was simply too strong and too smart this time, and held on to the end to net his first-ever win at Daytona!
"I honestly still can’t believe it!" said Roczen. "I really put my head down. I had some really good lines, and when you make those passes you have to put your head down and focus on your lines or they will retaliate. I seriously can’t believe this happened. I mean, now Justin Brayton has been giving me crap for a long time because he has one of these and I don’t. We made a bunch of changes to the bike and that really helped. I made some good passes and the track was actually really racy tonight. I think it was at its best in the main. I’m so proud of this team, we put in so much work. I’d like to get a few more of these, but we’re gonna celebrate tonight."
Was it that final mistake that ended Webb’s shot?
“Yeah it was,” he said. “You can’t make mistakes, as many as I did, and expect to win, but Kenny rode great, he made a pass on me, got around AP, and that put the urgency in me, but I made too many mistakes. Yeah another second place for me here. Hate to say it! But a good night for points. We’ll regroup and try to get it going again at Indy, and try not to be so complacent next weekend."
For Plessinger, his first podium of the season was much-needed.
"Yeah I'm pretty satisfied after the start of the season," said Plessinger. "I gotta give it up to the whole team, they’ve been behind me and believing in me, it’s been a ride but we pulled it off. I love this track, it’s a good night and I’m gonna go celebrate."
Justin Cooper put in a huge charge late, passing Sexton and nearly nabbing third from Plessinger in the end. This pushed Sexton back to fifth. Cooper's final push was impressive!
"It was a really good charge," said Cooper. "I saw there was 10 minutes left. I got to Jason [Anderson] and he made it tough on me, we played cat and mouse a bit and I lost some time to the KTMs. But man, it was close, almost got to the podium. Overall it was a solid night and I loved the bike, I wish I had a shot at that win but I was charging. We’re going to get a podium at some point down the road. It’s been a really good four races in a row now in the top five, consistency is there and the speed is there and every time I’m riding I feel good."
