Lawrence vs. Sexton
The 2024 AMA Pro Motocross Championship is over half done, and in the 450 Class the battle for the championship is now between Chase Sexton and Hunter Lawrence. Sexton is coming off a resounding 1-1 at RedBud and leads Lawrence by seven points, but Lawrence was looking strong last Saturday until he crashed. It’s anyone’s guess who’ll come out on top at Spring Creek, but if Sexton has another big points day, it’ll be a big step toward becoming the 2024 Pro Motocross 450 national champion. -Aaron Hansel
Plessinger Rising
Maybe it was all the American flags and bald eagles at RedBud, but whatever it was, Aaron Plessinger was back on point in Michigan, going 4-2 for second overall. The last time he finished this high in a moto was back at Hangtown! Is this a sign of what’s to come for the rest of the summer? If so, we should be in for a great battle for third overall between Plessinger and Justin Cooper, who he trails by ten points. -Hansel
Stop the Bleeding
The summer isn’t going in Tom Vialle’s favor. The Red Bull KTM rider has shown flashes of speed, but still trails Haiden Deegan by 43 points. Right now Vialle isn’t in realistic contention, and he’s going to need Deegan to have some bad luck to get back in the fight. But, he still needs to be close enough in the points to take advantage of any opportunity, which means he needs to start chipping away at Deegan’s massive lead. Will Vialle regain some ground at Spring Creek? -Hansel
First Timer
RedBud wasn’t the first time Chance Hymas went 4-1 this summer (he also did it at Thunder Valley), but it is the first time the math worked out to deliver Hymas the overall victory. The Honda HRC rider was amazing in the second moto, taking charge early and leading every single lap to seal the deal. He’s clearly snapped more pieces of the puzzle in place this summer. Can he repeat the feat at Spring Creek? -Hansel
Feel Good Story
If Ty Masterpool winning a moto at RedBud doesn’t make you smile, you’re more sinister and heartless than Monty Burns. After losing his ride with Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing a few years ago, Masterpool has been toiling away in the privateer trenches, even riding through the pain of appendicitis last year during SMX, before getting the chance of a lifetime as a fill-in rider at Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki. Now, with factory backing, he's living up to his potential, and it’s turning into a riveting comeback story. Can Masterpool keep tugging the fans’ heartstrings at Spring Creek? -Hansel
Danger Rubber Boy
We can’t take credit for that title, it comes courtesy of Racer X commenter William Costello, but it’s fitting! Haiden Deegan has had some nasty crashes this summer, including a huge one at RedBud, yet somehow he just pops right back up every single time, looking none the worse for wear. And after taking fifth overall at RedBud, his worst finish of the summer so far, he’ll look to rebound in the results at Spring Creek, too. -Hansel
Go Jo
Whatever Jo Shimoda’s been doing during the week lately, he needs to keep it up. He was crazy fast at Southwick, and backed it up with another extremely strong second moto at RedBud that saw him nearly nipping at Hymas’ heels at the end. If Shimoda can figure out how to get those strong results in the first motos too, he’s going to win an overall, and soon. -Hansel
Table For Three
Jason Anderson was able to grab a moto podium at RedBud (his second of the season) but his 5-3 scores set him up for fourth overall. Assuming Chase Sexton and Hunter Lawrence will finish on the podium practically every weekend that leaves one more spot for Jason Anderson, Aaron Plessinger, and Justin Cooper to fight over. Will Anderson be able to nab his first overall podium of the year at Millville? -Sarah Whitmore
Finding His Groove
Malcolm Stewart had his best ride of the season so far at RedBud, going 6-7 for sixth overall. Sixth also happened to be his best finish in supercross this year, which he did not get until the very last race at Salt Lake. He has been looking better each and every weekend, could Malcolm be an outdoor guy now? -Whitmore
When/Where
Okay this one isn’t so much a “what” to watch, but more of a “when” to watch. The race airs live at 1:30 Eastern, which is 12:30 local Minnesota time, instead of the typical 1:00 pm local start time. This might make things a little tighter in the morning for the riders, but the race will be aired live on NBC, so if you still don’t have Peacock you’ll be able to catch this one. -Whitmore
